HOME IS by Norman Nawrocki

HOME IS a bed to sleep in
a bus stop shelter
floors that squeak
that motel over there
HOME IS a bathroom to wash up in
my small tent by the lake
this heated garage
under the bleachers in the park
HOME IS shared with family and friends
my room, 10 foot by 6 foot, no window
the tic toc of a wall clock
a piece of cardboard to sleep on
HOME IS a safe place to come to each night
under that fir tree
something I only dream about
a wagon

HOME IS a quiet space away from the craziness
a reflection of you
what they stole from us a long time ago
wherever I can hide
HOME IS a place to fill with love
my blue Dodge van
under a piece of plastic
a corrugated metal shack I built myself
HOME IS a shower with hot water
our cave in a cliff outside town
wherever my dog and I can sleep undisturbed
our rotting house on the reserve
HOME IS a stove to cook food on
a big old tent tied to a tree
a hot air sidewalk grill
only a memory
HOME IS a closet with clothes
a Walmart parking lot
one room that eight of us share
under that bridge
HOME IS where you can close the door
a hole in the ground by the tracks
my car parked on a side street
hidden in the subway tunnel /2

2/

HOME IS where you can eat in peace
a suitcase on wheels
my friend’s couch
a tarp stretched over a shopping cart
HOME IS this abandoned garbage truck
a rolled up newspaper to rest my head on
somewhere I ran away from
a place I was forced to leave
